A Deadly Pandemic Wasn’t Enough, Four Asteroids Are Approaching Earth Says NASA

It wasn’t enough that COVID-19 pandemic is trying to kill us, now NASA’s Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies or CNEOS has reported that on 21st March and 23rd March, a total of fourasteroids will be approaching Earth and are expected to fly really close to our planet.
The four asteroids have been named by CNEOS as 2020 FK, 2020 FS, 2020 DP4 and 2020 FFI. the FK is the smallest of the lot, which is just 43 feet in diameter. It is coming towards our planet at a speed of over 37,000 kilometres per hour and will pass by at a distance of 1.36 million kilometres.

The 2020 FS is slightly larger, with a diameter of 56 feet and is travelling at a relatively lower speed of just 15,000 kilometres per hour. It will be the farthest asteroid to fly by earth at around 3.05 million kilometres away. The 2020 FK flew by our planet at 9:35 AM IST, whereas the 2020 FS will pass by around 8:59 PM IST.

On 23rd March, we’ll see the 2020 DP4 make its approach towards Earth. It is the largest of the lot with a diameter of 180 feet. It will be flying at a distance that’s 1.35 million kilometres away from Earth at a speed of 29,000 kilometres per hour, so there’s nothing to really worry about.

The 2020 FFI, on the other hand, is the second smallest of the lot, with a diameter of 48 feet. Oddly enough, it is the fastest of the lot, travelling at a speed of 47,000 kilometres per hour.

Moreover, it will also be the closest one Earth at just around 7,13,000 kilometre away. The 2020 DP4 will pass by on 12:04 AM IST whereas 2020 FFI will pass by at around 3:39 AM IST.

There’s no need to worry

If you’re concerned about any of the four asteroids impacting earth, worry not. None of the four asteroids are going to come anywhere close to the earth’s surface — the nearest anyone is coming to earth is at a distance of 7.13 lakh kilometre away. For reference, when it’s at its closest to earth, the moon is just over 3.6 lakh kilometre away — which places the nearest of the four asteroids almost twice that distance away at 7.13 lakh kilometre.

Even last year, European Space Agency initially gave a 1-in-7000 chance of an approaching asteroid impacting earth in September 2019, which they later said would miss — it indeed missed the earth completely. Almost the entire world won’t even know the passage of these current four asteroids, apart from amateur and professional astronomers keeping track. So don’t worry.

Nigeria’s Oil Reserves Will Run Dry In 49 Years

The nation’s crude oil reserves of 37 billion barrels, two per cent of which is being produced annually, will be depleted in 49 years, according to the Department of Petroleum Resources .
The reserves, which stood at 37. 45 billion barrels in 2014 , fell to 37. 06 billion barrels in 2015 and 36. 74 billion barrels in 2016. It, however, rose to 36.97 billion barrels in 2017 and 37 billion barrels in 2018, the DPR data showed .
“ The nation’ s depletion rate and life index are 2. 04 per cent and 49. 03 years respectively, ” the regulator said .
The reserves depletion rate is a measure of 2018 total oil and condensate production divided by the reserves as of January 1, 2019, according to the DPR .
It said , “ This indicator gives a bird ’s eye on an annual basis , what percentage proportion of the quoted reserves was produced .
“ The life index , on the other hand , is a measure of the reserves as of January 1, 2019, divided by the total production in 2018 . This parameter highlights how long ( in years) quoted reserves volumes will be available for production .”
The DPR said to achieve the government ’s aspiration of four million barrels per day production and reserves of 40 billion barrels , “ there is a need for corresponding increase in reserves as production increases . ”
He noted that if that was not done , “ the life index will fall from a sustainable long- term threshold to a less futuristic and sustainable medium to short- term range .”
The nation ’s oil and gas production structure is majorly split between Joint Ventures onshore and in shallow water with foreign and local companies, and the Production Sharing Contracts in deepwater offshore, to which most of the international oil companies have shifted their focus in recent years.
The JV operators, despite having the highest production (about 41. 64 per cent) among all the contract types, recorded a low depletion rate of about 1. 8 per cent and high life index of 56 .34 years, according to the DPR .
It said the PSC companies had the highest depletion rate of 3.10 per cent and the lowest life index of 32.15 years, while accounting for about 36. 08 per cent of the nation’ s total production .
“ Perhaps , the companies may have taken advantage of the poor government take in the deep offshore terrain to deplete the reserves therein with little regard for long- term sustainable production as amplified by the life index ,” the regulator said in a report.
It said the sole risk companies had the lowest depletion rate of 1. 5 per cent and the highest life index of 65. 49 years.
The regulator said these companies accounted for about 20. 14 per cent of the nation’ s total production in 2018, adding, “ This depletion rate does not reflect the fact these companies hold the second largest reserves of about 26.90 per cent. ”
The marginal field operators produced about 2 .14 per cent of the nation’ s total production in 2018, with a depletion rate of about 2. 7 per cent, life index of 36 .83 years and a national reserves portfolio of 1. 61 per cent.
The DPR said about nine operating companies , which it described as “ unhealthy ” , “ have oil and condensate life index of less than 15 years.”
“ The statistics paint a very gloomy picture for these companies and urgent steps will be taken to address this observed trend. The department is engaging the companies to review their strategic plan to guarantee future reserves growth in order for them to remain in business, ” it said .
According to the regulator , as of January 1, 2019 , the reserves replacement ratio, which measures the addition to reserves relative to the total production , for Nigeria’s oil and condensate reserves stood at four per cent.
It said “ Though this shows a positive RRR , it is not an impressive performance as just four per cent of the 2018 annual production was replaced via net addition to reserves.
“ The ideal scenario is when we have a 100 per cent RRR , i . e replace reserves at the same production rate . The RRR is used to judge the operating performance of the exploration and production industry. An RRR that is consistently over 100 per cent is ideal as it indicates that more reserve is being replaced than is produced. ”
Last week, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, said the nation’ s oil sector had worsened as the uncertain fiscal environment put a damper on the investments badly needed to ramp up oil production and increase reserves.
He warned that most of the resources might have to be left in the ground if not explored and produced before the world moves away from oil .
He said , “ If there is a lot of exploration , we believe that a lot of oil still remains to be found in Nigeria. And that is the beauty about Nigeria. Nigeria is not yet a mature territory; it is still very prolific. ”
“ There has been no targeted exploration for gas and yet we have 200 Tcf reserves. So, we believe that if we really go out looking for gas, we can find a lot more that will put us in the league of the most prolific in the world .
“ Let us allow the investment to come into Nigeria, because there is still a lot of oil and gas to be found . Unfortunately, the bad news is that the world ’s 2020 outlook tells you that by 2040, oil and gas will account for only 50 per cent of the energy of the world .”

Adewale Oyekan Sentenced To Death

The Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a Lagos prince, Adewale Oyekan, and one Lateef Balogun to death.

The 50-year-old prince and his 27-year-old accomplice who is a former domestic staff were sentenced on Monday for killing one Sikirat Ekun, a 62-year-old businesswoman and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Adewale is the son of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, the Oba of Lagos who passed away on March 1, 2003.
He hired Balogun for N6,000 to murder Ekun.
The convicts who have been in custody for seven-years murdered Ekun by strangling her and throwing her corpse into a 1,000-feet well located in her home.
While convicting and sentencing the defendants in a two-hour judgement, Justice Raliatu Adebiyi said that the prosecution had proved the charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The circumstantial evidence was strong and cogent; the act of the defendants in killing the deceased was intentional and premeditated,” she held.
The judge added, “The court finds that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the offence of conspiracy and murder and are accordingly found guilty of the two-count charge.
“Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011 stipulates the punishment for the offence of murder as follows:

“Subject to the provisions of any other law, a person who commits the offence of murder shall be sentenced to death. Same is the punishment for conspiracy to commit murder as contained in Section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.”
Justice Adebiyi noted that the provisions of the law she cited do not give the court any discretion whatsoever in sentencing the defendants.
“For this reason, the first and second defendants are hereby sentenced accordingly on each of count one and two to death by hanging. May God the giver of life have mercy on your soul,” she said
The leader of the prosecution team, Mr Akin George, explained that the convicts committed the offences at on October 17, 2012, at about 1am at the home of the deceased in the Omole Phase I of the state.
He stated that the deceased was a restauranteur who knew Oyekan due to her friendship with his late mother and employed him as the manager of her restaurant just to render assistance to the prince.
“Balogun the second defendant, was a former domestic staff of Ekun who was employed by her (Ekun) to take care of her elderly father. His employment was, however, terminated following a dispute with Ekun.

“The convicts conspired, killed the deceased, and threw her corpse in a well within the premises of her home and took over her businesses and properties, including her bus which was sold for N170,000,” George narrated.
He added, “When any enquiry was made by family and friends about her whereabouts, Oyekan informed them that she had travelled to Abuja for the Ileya festival. He passed this information by sending a text message from Ekun’s mobile phone.

“Following panic and worry from members of Ekun’s family and after an extensive search, her corpse was found two months later in December 2012 by well diggers and firefighters.”

“The convicts had placed a generator, a gas cylinder and other household items on the corpse to conceal it in the 1,000 feet well,” the lawyer said.

The trial at the State High Court began on April 14, 2015, and five witnesses including police officers, Ekun’s nephew, Iyiola Olaniyi, and her only child, Mrs Folashade Amurun, testified against the convicts.

On the other hand, Oyekan and Balogun testified in their defence.

Giving their testimonies, both convicts denied knowing each other, noting that they met for the first time at the police station.

They also denied committing the offence.

Oyekan, in his evidence, said that he met Ekun who was a friend of his mother at a PDP rally in 2011 after he had returned from the United States of America where he obtained a degree in architecture.

He said he met the deceased thereafter at her home where she offered to assist him by employing him to manage her restaurant.

Before the sentence was passed, the defence counsel, Mr O.C. Onwumerie, did not make an allocutus (plea for mercy) while the trial was ongoing.

“I will be leaving sentencing to the hands of the court,” Onwumerie said.

President Buhari Honours Bashir Abubakar And Josephine Ugwu

President Buhari has presented Integrity awards to two public servants, Bashir Abubakar and Mrs Josephine Ugwu of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, for exhibiting Integrity in the performance of their official duties.
Buhari presented the awards to the recipients at the opening of the two-day National Summit on Diminishing Corruption in Public Sector held at the State House Banquet hall, Abuja.
The event is being organized by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in collaboration with Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).
The Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Abubakar rejected 412,000 dollars (N150 million) bribe offered to him by drug traffickers to import 40 containers laden with Tramadol, a controlled and highly addictive drug.
Ugwu, a former cleaner at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos had on different occasions returned millions of naira found in the course of her duty, including the sum of N12 million dollars forgotten in the toilet by an airport user.
Speaking at the event, Buhari stressed the need for Nigerians to uphold the traditionally cherished values of honesty and integrity.

‘‘Let me again note with concern the need to uphold the values of loyalty, honesty, trust, and integrity that were once cherished in our public service. Ethics and integrity are the foundation of an enduring society.

‘‘Nigerian culture does not tolerate dishonesty. Therefore, we must reclaim our traditional values of honesty, integrity and hard work. In spite of the few bad eggs, I am delighted that many Nigerians still hold on to our traditionally cherished values of honesty and integrity,” he said.

Buhari called on the National Assembly to fast-track the passage of the Special Crimes Court Bill. He also urged the judiciary to embrace and support the creation of the Special Crimes Court.

He said: ‘‘the fight against corruption is of course not only for government and anti-corruption agencies alone. All arms and tiers of government must develop and implement the anti-corruption measures. I invite the legislative and judicial arms of government to embrace and support the creation of Special Crimes Court that Nigerians have been agitating for to handle corruption cases.’’

President Buhari noted that the passage of the Bill was a ‘‘specific priority’’ of this administration’s Economic Recovery & Growth Plan 2017-2020. The President also used the occasion, which marked the launch of the Constituency Projects Transparency Group (CPTG) Report Phase One, to reiterate his appeal to all well-meaning Nigerians to join in the fight against corruption.

‘‘The war against corruption cannot be won without prevention, enforcement, public education and enlightenment. I encourage the ICPC and other law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts in public education, enlightenment and engagement with citizens.

‘‘I also urge our development partners, civil society organizations, and the media to continue to support our efforts to strengthen ethical values and integrity in Nigeria,’’ he said.
